You skirted around the corner, nearly falling from the speed of the turn, and chased the werewolf down the ally. He turned left into a small alcove that led nowhere. He turned at the sound of your steps and before you could get a shot off, he lunged at you. He tackled you to the ground and you were forced to drop the gun to keep yourself from getting bit. You kept one hand on his neck and moved the other to his eye and pressed in as hard as you could. He snarled and tore through your shoulder with his elongated nails. You cried out in pain and took the risk of grabbing your knife from your pocket. You quickly stabbed the werewolf in the neck and dragged the blade down.

The silver burned deep into the skin and warm blood gushed onto you from the wound. The attack gave you enough time to scramble back to your gun. You had almost reached it when your arm was grabbed and you were thrown back against the brick wall. Your head stuck something cold and hard and your vision instantly blurred beyond use. Your head began to pound and you blinked wildly, but to no avail.

There was a strong impact to your chest and you were thrown onto your back. This time when your head smacked the ground everything went black. You turned to your stomach and scrambled to the last place you had seen your gun. Your hands flew over the cracked concrete in a panic. Your hands had just managed to wrap around the barrel when you were dragged back by your leg. You flipped onto your back and instinctively raised your arm to block any oncoming blows.

When you felt the attacker grab your wrist you fired three shots in quick succession above, praying that at least one hit its mark. The grip on your wrist loosened and a loud thump resonated by your right ear. You laughed in disbelief. You slowly felt your way up the wall and leaned back. You felt weak and dizzy. You felt the gash in your head and found a steady flow of blood. Most of your hair was sticky and matted from it. You rubbed and rubbed your eyes but everything remained dark. You let out a ragged cry and warm tears began to mix with the blood and sweat on your cheeks. You pulled your phone from your pocket and felt splintered glass beneath your fingers. You continuously pressed the home button but failed to elicit the voice command. You audibly cursed and replaced the broken hunk of metal in your pocket.

You stretched your hands out in front of you and made your way to the opposite side of the ally. Once there you just followed the wall. With each step your dizziness grew and all the while you felt blood seeping from both your head and shoulder wound. You were making slow painful progress when your foot struck another pipe. You fell to the floor again and didn’t have the strength to get back up. You tried to lift your head but found the task impossible. You didn’t even have the energy to cry any longer. Of all the ways you’d thought you would go out, blind with blood loss had never crossed your mind. You heard approaching footsteps and felt a rush of adrenaline. You sat up with your back pressed against the wall and held your gun out in front of you.

“Stay back!” you yelled in the direction of the noise. The gun was knocked away from you and you felt hands grip your shoulders. You thrashed around and tried to remove the hands but they were much stronger than you.

“I’m here to help you,” a deep voice told you. The hands moved up to cover your eyes as you continued to attempt to remove yourself from the strangers grasp. Your eyes grew warm and you began crying out as they began to burn. You could feel the blood boiling in the veins behind your eyes. The pain grew so excruciating you thought you were going to faint. Just as the pain reached its peak the stranger removed his hands and the pain ceased. You blinked and were amazed to see a dark-haired man standing above you. You blinked and rubbed your eyes, expecting your vision to disappear again, but it remained. You looked up in astonishment. The man gave you a small smile.

“Are you…are you God?” you stammered. He laughed lightly.

“No. Just His servant, like you.”

“His… servant?” you questioned.

“I’m an angel. My name is Castiel.”

“An angel,” you gasped. You furrowed your brow in concentration. “Castiel….the angel of Thursdays?”

“That is correct.” You nodded slowly, then shook your head. “You appear confused.”

“You said ‘Just His servant. Like you.’ But I’m not His servant?”

“Of course you are,” Castiel answered. He joined you on the floor as he continued to explain. “You work tirelessly to rid this world of evil. You do everything you can to help and protect those that cannot help themselves. Your work is highly valued and greatly appreciated. I was sent to ensure that you are able to continue this work and I am to intervene when necessary. You cannot continue to live as hunter if you are blind, so I intervened.”

“Thank you for that, Castiel.”

“You are most welcome, (y/n). I was told you name when I was assigned the task to watch over you, “ he added when you looked at him confused.

“Right,” you nodded. “That makes sense.”

“I can heal your shoulder now if you would like.”

“Oh, yeah yeah. Go for it.” He placed his hand over your injury and you again felt the excruciating burn, except this time you were able to see the brilliant light that emanated from Castiel’s hands.

“I apologize for the discomfort,” he said after he had completed the task.

“It’s fine you replied,” as you shrugged your jacket back on. “So if you were assigned to look over me, does that make you my guardian angel?”

“In a sense yes, being that I am an angel and I will be ‘guarding’ you but in another sense no. Guardian angels are a different class of angel than I. I am several ranks above Guardian.” You nodded in understanding. Castiel suddenly looked off in the distance and stared blankly for a few moments before turning back to you. “I am currently needed in Heaven and must leave,” he said as he helped you to stand up. “I suggest you rest in your motel room and I will visit with you shortly.” As soon as he finished his sentence he disappeared, leaving you alone in the shabby ally.

“Heaven? Angels?” you whispered in disbelief. “Angels have been here this whole time?” you laughed. You paused for a moment then furrowed your brow. “Angels have been here this whole time.” You stomped out of the ally, heading to the nearest library. “Somebody has some questions to answer to.”
